What is NVC?

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a method of communication developed by Marshall Rosenberg , designed to improve relationships between people through empathy, honesty and mutual respect.

Marshall Rosenberg – Workshop NonViolent Communication (english)

The Nonviolent Communication process by  Marshall Rosenberg encourages us to focus on what we observe and to make a clear distinction between this observation and our interpretations or judgements; it also teaches us to create a link between our thoughts and feelings and the needs or values that lie beneath them (e.g. support, protection, love); last but not least, we learn to identify and clearly express strategies for meeting those needs.

These skills help us move from a language of criticism, blame and demands to a language based on human needs, a language of life that consciously connects us to the universal qualities that sustain and enrich our lives, and directs our attention to the actions we can take to bring these qualities to life.

Nonviolent Communication gives us concrete tools for creating relationships based on compassion, understanding and mutual respect.

In the professional environment

Nonviolent Communication is a very powerful tool for improving productivity and morale. Experiencing NVC in the workplace strengthens our ability to live and work productively and harmoniously, and allows our actions to be motivated by compassion rather than fear, guilt or shame. The purpose of NVC is to help us build relationships based on understanding and compassion, so that the needs of each of us are met.

The benefit for companies? Employees who trust that their needs are taken into account usually remain loyal to the company they work for. The method offers the tools you need to motivate employees without using fear, guilt or shame, to evaluate performance in a way that encourages growth, and to resolve office conflicts in a way that increases mutual respect, understanding and trust. You will make meetings more productive, improve workplace morale and employee engagement, build united teams and support creative solutions for improving customer relationships.

Nonviolent Communication involves:

  • expressing your own views without coercing others;
  • honest expression, without criticism or insults;
  • receiving a message with empathy, regardless of how it is expressed.

In schools and kindergartens

Education is far too precious to be driven by coercive tactics. Nonviolent Communication promotes education motivated by respect for life, by the desire to learn skills and to contribute to one's own well-being and that of others.

Putting the principles of Nonviolent Communication into practice helps teachers, administrators, students and parents make school a place where students love to learn, teachers love to teach, and parents trust that their children's needs – for safety, respect and growth in knowledge – are being met.

NVC has so far been introduced in schools in the USA, Serbia, Denmark, Sweden, Italy and Israel, with encouraging results for everyone involved:

  • Fewer conflicts
  • Effective handling of disagreements as they arise
  • Increased ability to listen to one another
  • Mutual respect among everyone involved in the educational process
  • More cooperation
  • More fun for everyone

In family relationships

Nonviolent Communication can radically improve our relationships by helping us focus our attention on understanding those around us with empathy, yet without compromise.

The method gives us the tools to answer questions such as:

  • How do we imagine a harmonious relationship, and what are the topics that are hard for us to talk about in a relationship?
  • How do we turn potential conflicts into a compassionate dialogue?
  • How do we express our wishes and needs so that our partner does not take what we say as an order?
  • What blocks empathy, and how do I offer empathy to myself?
  • How do I identify my child's needs?
  • How do I build a relationship based on cooperation with my child?
